The DrAlienSmith Alien8 is a figure 8 dynamic microphone designed for low frequency sources that also need to have a detailed mid range. It really shines on kick drums, bass amps and even guitar amps by capturing a big low end with a unique presence. It's an almost 'finished' sound that needs little or no EQ to effortlessly place sounds up front in the mix. Google search 'TapeOp Alien8' for their review.
The Alien8 features two identical 50mm headphone drivers as capsules. The top one faces forward while the bottom one faces back. Each capsule's polar pattern is figure 8 but like some ribbon microphones, the rear lobe of each capsule sounds different to the front. By using two capsules the Alien8 takes advantage of these tonal variations with its 3 position switch. Select top capsule only to get a brighter sound, select bottom capsule only for more body or choose both capsules to get the best of both worlds (our favourite setting). All 3 settings are figure 8.
While taking a little design inspiration from the classic AKG D30 (dual capsule) and Beyer M380 (headphone driver), the Alien8 is definitely not intended to be a clone or a remake, it has a distinct sound all of its own.
In 2026 the Alien8 has a new look. The body has been redesigned and it's now manufactured using cast grade aluminium via an industrial Laser Power Bed Fusion metal 3D printer.
The Alien8 is transformer balanced and unaffected by phantom power and comes standard with a Deluxe Mic Mount as well as a hardcase.

I own all three versions of this mic and i still think V1 was the best.
V1 was solidly built and the mount was super practical to use and to position inside a kick drum.
V2 was the same mic but the great V1 mount was replaced by a cheap and useless mic clip, forcing the user to spend extra on the "delux mic mount" which is overcomplicated and still feels cheap.
V3 is trying to look less hand made, but the quality of the castings isn't great, mine has bulged grills.
Still, a great sounding mic.
I have been recording with this mic in my studio this past year and I am extremily happy with it. I have never come across a design so clever and versatile as this microphone. This has been my go to mic for kick, and even bass cab on every project so far (and there have been a lot).
Whenever you need low-end punch, clarity and excellent transient response, this is the mic you need.

We've used the mic as both an inside and outside kick: in both uses, the option of using both capsules is really great. On bass amp (Ampeg B15), this mic shines at capturing tone! And tone is King!
